And for that I'm going to suggest dual-booting. To get a feel for a new OS you need to use it like you would on your 'normal' PC. The safest way to deal with a whole new OS is to use it from within a virtual machine, a fake virtual PC that doesn't run the risk of corrupting any real-life hardware.
